Driving lessons in Cambridge
There are many difficult roads in Cambridge. If you are taking driving lessons in Cambridge with an experienced driving instructor, he or she should know these areas. If you are taking private driving lessons, it may be a little difficult to understand what areas these are. Of course there is no substitute for a fully qualified and experienced driving instructor, but taking private driving lessons is also beneficial. During your private driving lessons, try to incorporate some if not all of the areas below to gain the best possible chance of passing the driving test.
Many tests are actually failed leaving the test centre. There are two driving test centres in Cambridge, Chesterton Road test centre and Cowley Road test centre. Ensure that you know the roads thoroughly around your chosen test centre. At Chesterton Road test centre, there isn't the ability to perform the bay parking manoeuvre. If your examiner would like you to perform this manoeuvre, he will take you to Cowley Road test centre to do this as there is bay parking available there. If your driving test is booked for Chesterton Road, you should still have a good understanding of the roads around Cowley Road test centre for this reason.
During your driving test, it is possible you will take some city driving, dual carriageway driving on the A14 and country / village roads such as those through Histon and Girton. The test routes for both Chesterton Road and Cowley Road, although different, do take you round many of the same difficult areas.
During your driving lessons, becoming proficient in these areas will benefit you significantly;
Chesterton one-way-system - Cambridge
This is located close to the Chesterton Road test centre. If this is your chosen test centre, you will be driving on this one-way-system without question. During your driving lessons in Cambridge, ensure you know every entrance into the one-way-system, correct lane discipline and all exit routes. A great many tests are failed in this area of Cambridge due to little knowledge and experience of this system. The use of road signs in certain areas of Cambridge is rather poor, so practice this one-way-system until you are familiar with each lane and it's exit road.
Milton roundabout - Cambridge
With little or no experience, this roundabout can easily fail a driving test.
This roundabout makes use of lanes entering and exiting to the chosen destination. Each entrance and exit of Milton roundabout can be potentially used during the driving test. During your driving lessons in Cambridge, ensure you read the signs carefully on approach so to select the correct lane to take you to the destination explained by the examiner. Lanes on this roundabout are clearly marked and the roundabout is controlled by lights. If you do find yourself in the incorrect lane, try and regain the correct lane by use of mirrors and indication. If it appears too dangerous to change lanes, remain in your current lane and the test examiner will take you on a slightly different course.
Histon Road roundabout - Cambridge
Although
quite a simple roundabout, many learners struggle with lane discipline on this one. Controlled by lights, this roundabout is a medium size with two lanes. Lanes are marked for your destination road although due to the roundabout being fast paced, it can be difficult gaining the correct lane in time. Test routes do not take you off in the Huntingdon / St Neots direction via the A14 on this roundabout, but all other entrances and possible exits must be practiced.
Victoria Road / Histon Road traffic lights - Cambridge
A difficult little one-way-system if not practiced, especially leaving Victoria Road into Histon Road. It can be difficult seeing Histon Road on approach. The correct lane must be chosen on the approach and correct car position as there is a yellow box junction. If your exit is clear, you may position your car in the yellow box junction, although you may have to give way to oncoming vehicles until your filter arrow illuminates. On making the turn, another junction is almost immediate with priority to the left. During your private driving lessons in Cambridge, a good understanding of this direction is needed as well as a good understanding of this one-way-system in general as all entrances and exits are potential test routes.
Mini roundabouts - Kings Hedges - Cambridge
Very popular area of the test routes. In the Kings Hedges area there are many mini roundabouts. Those down Northfields Avenue can be a favorite on the independent part of the driving test. Mini roundabouts leading onto Arbury Road can be very difficult to see approaching traffic, so need particular caution. Traffic lights joining Campkin Road to Arbury Road can be difficult to the unobservant. Traffic lights and mini roundabouts around the Arbury and Kings Hedges areas need to be practiced in driving lessons as these are very frequently used during the driving test and represent a challenge.
These areas represent the prominent 'hot spots' in Cambridge to gain proficiency on during your private driving lessons. It is highly unlikely however that without lessons from a qualified driving instructor, you will pass the driving test. Cambridge Driving School offer driving lessons and intensive courses by fully qualified male and female driving instructors.
